Silly Hilly Walk/Ride is April 26th, 2pm - 4pm

APRIL 16, 2014 | EDITOR

Bob Edmiston asks that we spread the word about Silly Hilly:

We need all feet and wheels on deck for this fun route scouting day in the hilly slopes between North Capitol Hill and Madison Valley, Arboretum and Montlake. Bring your feet, bikes, kids, dogs, cameras, fun hats and silly wear.

Silly Hilly is a fun, inclusive, family-friendly ride/walk to explore potential greenway route options for the northern segment of the Central Area Neighborhood Greenway between John and 520, including part of Madison Valley and the Arboretum neighborhood.

The fun starts at the Montlake Elementary School playground, where participants will be divided into teams upon arrival. Teams will ride or walk one of four route options while taking pictures and completing a scavenger hunt along the way. We'll Stop, Doc and Tweet all along our stroll. Data collected from this activity will directly inform the Greenway route choices for Phase 3 of the 23rd Ave repaving project from E John St to SR520.

At Miller Park (our finish line), we’ll have kid-friendly games, prizes and refreshments, as well as opportunities to share ideas on which greenway route makes the most sense!

This ride is being organized jointly by Central Seattle Greenways, Montlake Greenways, Madison Park Greenways and Cascade Bicycle Club. A bike is not necessary for this fun route scouting adventure.

Crime Reports Mar 2014

APRIL 14, 2014 | LOWELL HARGENS

A little over 30 incidents in our neighborhood were reported to the Seattle Police last month. Seven were car prowl thefts (signified on the map by green tiles with an auto containing a hole), four of which occurred in the Arboretum (some of the symbols on the map represent multiple occurrences). Four more incidents involved some type of monetary fraud or theft (green tiles with a dollar sign), including credit card theft, forgery, and identity theft.

There were three cases of threat or harassment (red tiles with an exclamation point) three of property damage or graffiti (green tiles with spray paint can) and, more seriously, three break-ins or burglaries (green tiles with eight-pointed star).

1. During the early evening of March 2 someone entered a home close to 26th and Union through an unlocked back door. The intruder stole various items not listed in the police report and left before the owners returned home.

2. On March 8 a neighbor reported that the front door of a rental house on 24th Ave. had been kicked open. The police searched the house and concluded that whoever kicked open the front door had probably left through the back of the house. When notified, the tenants discovered that the intruder(s) had taken some laptops and a video game console.

3. Sometime between March 18th and March 20th someone broke into a basement storage room of a specialty store on Union Street. Apparently nothing was taken from the storage room, although the intruder left a blanket in the room and vomit on the floor.

Also among the more serious incidents during March were a mugging (red tile with eye mask) on Pike St. close to 25th Ave. on March 25 (a detailed police report on this incident is not available), a non-aggravated assault (red tile with fist) close to 23rd and Madison on March 22nd, and a firearms discharge (blue tile with revolver) on March 30th.

A glance at the police reports map shows three main locations for incidents in our neighborhood, the Arboretum (car prowls), Union St. (both property crimes and crimes against persons) and Madison St. (ditto). Like Madison Park and Montlake, our neighborhood had relatively little crime compared to neighborhoods to our south, east, and north (U district). You can see this, as well as gaining additional information on the March police reports, by visiting the SPD’s police reports website. Up-to-date information for April is also available there.

McGilvra Elementary Celebrates 100 Years With Auction

APRIL 5, 2014 | CLIMATE MARCH AT THE VALLEY SCHOOL

McGilvra Elementary celebrated its 100th anniversary with its biennial auction on Saturday March 22nd, at Showbox SODO. Close to 300 guests attended including current families, McGilvra Alumni, and incoming kindergarten families. The night's events were hosted by Ken Carson, who was returning for his fourth McGilvra auction. John Platt and his staff from St. Cloud's provided the catering.

McGilvra Auction Image

The event had over 300 items donated from families, local businesses, and McGilvra teachers and staff. Some of the more popular items were Principal for A Day, where a student gets to make a new rule for that day, monitor lunch, and recess activities. A Seahawks VIP preseason training camp and a Shark Trip to the Farallon Islands off the coast of San Francisco were also big money raisers.

McGilvra would like to thank all of the local businesses that donated to the auction this year. Our staff and students are so grateful for your generosity. With continued cuts in education, the school relies more than ever on donations from parents and community members. Over 75% of the classrooms have a student to teacher ratio of 29:1. The money raised from the PTA pays for the art program, a part time school counselor, a math and reading specialist, part time classroom tutors, and technology and library grants.

McGilvra would especially like to thank its Presenting Sponsors; Dan and Larry Wilcynski from Wilcynski Partners, Mark Everts from Cobalt Mortgage, Dr. Lora Shahine and Partners from Pacific NW Fertility, and Chris Husband from CleanScapes. We would like to thank Platinum Sponsor Shawn Plaster from The Plaster Group, Gold Sponsor, Park Shore Senior Living, and Bronze Sponsor, Dr. Keith B. Wong. McGilvra would also like to thank its advertisers Kevin Trombold from Trombold Law, Wally Green from AllState, and Park Postal. Hemlock Printing was a major contributor by donating the catalogs and PaperlinX donated the bid paddles. Uber car service was instrumental in getting people to and from the auction safely while providing a generous discount to auction ticket holders. McGilvra would also like to thank local artist, Richard Carl Lehman, for use of his beautiful illustration of the school in many auction materials. Our school would not be the same without your support. Thank you!

Two Important Upcoming City Events

APRIL 2, 2014 | KATHRYN KELLER

logo-sns2014Seattle Neighborhood Summit is this Saturday April 5, 9 – noon, at the Seattle Center.

Come interact with elected officials, city departments, and each other. Learn how we can be more effective and share what is important to our neighborhood. I understand that over 400 people are registered and have filled out the survey, which has resulted in an exciting agenda that is now published on the website.

Childcare will be provided, and fun activities for children. Just note on the registration form that you are bringing your children. Even if you can’t make it, please fill out the survey. Between the networking and information at the event, and the survey results, our neighborhoods can be more effective in our abilities to work with each other and with the city government.

Please come to an open house Monday, April 14, 2014, 6 – 8 pm, at Miller Community Center.

How will Seattle be grow and be shaped for the next 20 years? Seattle 2035 is the yearlong project to update Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan, which addresses our housing, jobs, transportation, quality of life and environment. Alternatives are being studied now — that is where we come in. What are the important factors that make Seattle a great place to live and work? How should we grow? All comments are due by April 21 so the alternatives can be fully studied and the next phase of the process commence.

If you can’t attend the open house, but are interested in the current status, review this presentation, which has questions for consideration listed on page 43.

Send your comments about the alternatives or on the scope by email to [email protected] or to [email protected], or by USPS using this form.

Public Hearing on Seattle's Recreation Opportunities

APRIL 2, 2014 | CHRISTINA ARCIDY

We're trying to get the word out about the upcoming public hearing regarding a Parks District to provide stable, predictable funding for Seattle Parks and Recreation. The City Council is considering joining 17 other Washington cities in creating our own Parks District, and they need to hear from our community.

Here are the meeting details:

Monday, April 7, 2014
6:00 PM Public Hearing
Council Chambers, City Hall
600 Fourth Ave, 2nd Floor
Seattle, 98104

Our parks contribute so much to our quality of life, and provide so many important programs and services for people across our city and at all age and income levels. As everyone knows, Parks took huge budget cuts during the Great Recession. Community centers are currently open at 50% of their capacity and Parks faces a $270 million parks maintenance backlog.

The City Council needs to hear that the community wants to restore equal access to recreation opportunities. Read more details about the recommendations.
